Prioritize self-care and seek support when needed. Remember, it’s okay to put yourself first – your clients will appreciate you for it in the long run.
Make time and space to unwind and recharge, whether through meditation, deep breathing exercises, or taking a moment to yourself.
Grounding yourself before work (or in those moments when you’re feeling overwhelmed) can help you stay focused and manage emotions more effectively.
Take breaks – it’s easy to get caught up in the hustle and bustle of the salon, but skipping meals or denying yourself the opportunity to sit down and rest for a few minutes doesn’t help you or your clients.
Don’t bring work home with you. Setting boundaries between work and your personal life maintains a healthy balance and prevents burnout.
Make time to write down your thoughts and feelings to help you gain clarity and perspective on your mental health.
Find Support – whether it’s friends, family, or colleagues, having a support network to turn to in times of need can make all the difference in your mental health.
If you’re trying self-care strategies and find yourself still feeling stressed or overwhelmed, you may be experiencing symptoms of burnout, compassion fatigue, or other mental health challenges. To learn more about recognizing the signs of stress, anxiety, depression, or other mental health conditions, access the “Learn More About Mental Health” section on the Beauty Starts Within Campaign page.
Asking
for help
In the stylist community, reaching out for help might seem intimidating. As a stylist, you’re often seen as the one who listens, solves problems, and stays strong for your clients. But beneath the surface, many stylists deal with their own mental health challenges. Admitting struggles can be tough, however reaching out is a crucial step in prioritizing your well-being.
Below are some strategies for finding support when you’re ready. Expand each item to learn more.
Who knows what a stylist goes through better than another stylist? Reach out to a colleague you trust when you’re having trouble with work. They may have insights and advice for how to handle situations or suggestions for coping strategies.
Seek mentorship from a more experienced stylist. They can provide guidance, support, and perspective on managing burnout in the salon.
Look for opportunities to connect with stylists (your peers) who work at other salons to create a safe space for gathering and sharing, either online or in person.
Advocate for your own needs and well-being in the workplace. Be assertive in communicating your boundaries, limitations, and the support you require.
Consider seeking support from a licensed mental health professional if your struggles continue or worsen. Treatment options like therapy can provide a safe space to explore your feelings, develop coping strategies, and work towards improving your mental well-being.

Burnout, compassion fatigue, and daily stress are real and significant challenges for stylists, but you don’t have to face them alone. By recognizing the signs and symptoms of these issues and reaching out for support when needed, you can prioritize your mental health and well-being.
