Q&A WITH
JON CARLOS DE LA CRUZ
HAIR STYLIST & COSMOPROF ARTIST

I really had to learn boundaries! As much as I love my clients and hate to say no, it’s something I had to really work on for my own sanity.

Mental health is very important to me. I have a passion for what I do, but when I’m not 100 with myself I tend to dread it and develop an unhappiness with my job.

I love taking a vacation! And I don’t mean party, I mean a vacation to a brand-new peaceful place where I can rest and get inspired.

I love to exercise. I love being outdoors and hiking. May reward myself with wine and game night with friends at the end of the week.

I like to challenge myself periodically. Dry months. Body cleanse, new diets, classes to perfect my craft, try to learn a new language

Self-care plays a major role in my life. If I don’t take care of myself during my downtime, then I won’t be able to show up for my clients the way they deserve. Self-care to me looks like taking time for myself. Praying daily, going to get a massage and getting my hair and nails done to get myself feeling good. I also make sure that I work out and get enough water and sleep and I make sure to spend quality time with my boyfriend because that feeds my soul.

Mental health means one’s sanity. Making healthy decisions and constantly using your brain to better yourself. Surrounding yourself with positive people and not taking on negative patterns that could lead to bad or depressing thoughts.

Some resources that I use to help with my mental health is to do check-ins on myself mentally. (Meditation). I will think about what I’m feeling emotionally and try to reset my mind and my intellect and always make sure I start out my day in good spirits.

I invite joy into my life by kicking out the bad stuff and only inviting the positivity. I know I can’t control negative things but if it’s up to me, I will do my best to turn things around in my mind to make sure that I don’t think negatively or assume anything. I live by these four agreements daily:

1. Be impeccable with your words
2. Don’t take anything personally
3. Don’t make assumptions
4. Always do your best

This helps me keep my joy.

I can’t live without my morning meditations. This helps set up my day to make sure I’m starting my day on a positive note.

STYLIST & SALON OWNER

I prioritize self-care, but it takes a lot of intentionality and prioritization. There are times when I put others and my business before myself (many probably can relate), and at those times I have to give my self-grace and reset so I can feel and be my best.

To me mental health means taking care of my emotional, psychological & social wellbeing. I try my hardest to be vulnerable with my clients and loved ones about prioritizing yoga, nutrition, sleep, balance and therapy to normalize that mental health (like mental wellness more) it is a journey and you must be intentional to maintain mental wellness.

I have an amazing life coach/therapist on speed dial and is one of my favorites in my phone. I have been seeing him since I was 38. I call him anytime I need assistance with life’s problems. I also practice yoga, workout regularly or swim when I can; I find so much peace under the water, and it feels like a reset for me. I also love reading and listening to podcasts & honestly online shopping lol!

I’m naturally a very positive person. The simplest things bring me joy; like taking my time to get ready in the morning and looking good. Also, I love having a good healthy meal, making time for a good workout, connecting authentically with my clients, getting to bed early, staring at my partners face, playing with our pets, being in the presence of my daughter and feeling loved.

I love making time to spend time by myself; even if it’s a minute after each client to simply recharge or two hours listening to music, doing self-care in my bathroom at home. My bathroom time is very sacred to me, I can do whatever I want and be able to have a quiet time by myself.
